AUSTIN, TX (May 22, 2006) Greater Austin Transportation Company recently announced the recipients of its scholarship program for independent contractor drivers and staff at Yellow Cab.
“We are excited for our scholarship recipients, and hope that these awards will help them to realize their goals and dreams,” said Jim Connolly, president of Greater Austin Transportation Company. “Education is the key to a person’s future.”
The $1,500 scholarships may be used for college or for training at a technical school. This year’s recipients are Lori Bohannon, Judi Pedlow, Kyra Clark, and Michelle Moore.
Lori Bohannon is the daughter of Janene Hawkins, who has worked for Yellow Cab for 8 years. Currently an exemplary student at Austin Community College, Bohannon plans to transfer to the University of Texas and hopes to earn a law degree.
Judi Pedlow, a longtime GATC employee, plans to use the scholarship to complete her own degree in writing. The aspiring writer has attended college on and off throughout her adult life and carries a high GPA. She says the scholarship will help her fulfill her dream by enabling her to complete her degree and finish several works in progress.
Kyra Clark works 55 hours a week while taking 12 15 credit hours per semester at St. Edwards. She aspires to be a translator/interpreter for the United States government. The scholarship will help her to pursue her goal to be the first person in her family to graduate from college. Kyra is the daughter of Denise Clark, who has been an independent contractor driver at Yellow Cab since 1998.
Yellow Cab Accounts Receivable Manager Michelle Moore joined the company in February 2004. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education and would like to return to school so that she can someday fulfill her ambition to receive a Master of Science Degree in Information Studies.
To be eligible, the individual or at least one member of his/her immediate family must be an employee or independent contractor driver at Yellow Cab. The student applicants also wrote an essay on why the scholarship is important to them and provided their transcripts. The applicants were judged based on their essay entries and transcripts as well as their financial needs.
